One of the largest museums of military history in Eastern Europe, the National Museum of Military History in Sofia, Bulgaria, and Threeding.com, a fast-growing 3D-printing marketplace and community, have announced a cooperation agreement for the 3D digitalization of military artifacts.

Under the agreement, Threeding.com will 3D scan part of the museum’s exhibits using Artec Scanners and put up their models in 3D printing friendly format on its portal. All 3D models will be available for free viewing on the museum’s website at www.militarymuseum.bg. A pilot project will mark the centenary of World War One.

Coordinated by Vesk Consult, the project will be running in cooperation with Artec 3D, a global leader in the development and manufacture of professional 3D scanners, which will provide its hardware, software and know-how.

The National Museum of Military History will receive royalties from the sales of 3D models and will be provided with free digital copies of all scanned exhibits, which can then be used for scientific and educational purposes.

Threeding will also work with the Museum of Military History to create a 3D gallery on the museum’s website over the next few months, offering users an opportunity to view exhibits online in 3D.

The partnership, which builds on successful cooperation between Threeding and Bulgaria’s regional history museums in Varna and Pernik, will enable Threeding to add unique military artifacts to its portfolio of 3D-printable models. Currently, there are over 150 models of museum objects, such as ancient sculptures, reliefs, architectural fragments of Ancient Greek and Roman origin, medieval weapons, icons and tools, available for sale in 3D printing friendly format at Threeding.com. The first models are already available on the website and include different weapons, military equipment and soldiers’ art from WW1.

“The National Museum of Military History is certain that the majority of its visitors – young, employed, open to innovations, and familiar with many European practices – will be excited by this new form of museum interaction,” says the director of the National Museum of Military History, Associate Professor Sonya Penkova. “The ambition to create a virtual museum is coupled with the wish to mark the anniversary of World War One using a novel approach for Bulgaria and the Balkans – acknowledging the cost of the war, its human and social ramifications. We hope that our joint efforts will accomplish this ambitious goal.”

Sculptraits took care of the 3D Scanning, utilizing their proprietary, state-of-the-art scanning technologies. Each student was given the opportunity to get scanned at Sculptraits Studios, and the 3D Scan data was then passed on to 3D designers for further processing and digital manipulation. Objex Unlimited then printed the manipulated designs on a Full-Colour Gypsem Printer. The end result is perfectly revolting… in the coolest way possible!

There is no denying the power and ease-of-use of the Artec 3D scanners. In fact, as we mentioned in an earlier post, the similar Artec Eva scanner (designed for slightly larger objects) was actually named the best 3D Scanner under $50,000. So when you have a product that already works great with a human operating it, imagine what happens when a robot learns how to use the scanner, and respond in real time to the feedback it’s getting?

The guys at Artec Group, along with engineers from the Visual Computing Research Center, Tel-Aviv University, the Memorial University of Newfoundland, the University of Konstanz, and Shandong University, asked the same question. They combined the Artec Spider with the PR2, a robot boasting a humanistic look and sense of movement. The PR2 holds the Artec in its ‘hand’ and puts it to use, rapidly scanning the most detailed and ornate objects from every angle. The double system captures 7.5 frames per second and processes 1 million points per second, meaning it gets the job done more expediently than a laser printer, and requires no post-processing.

According to 3DPrint.com: “The researchers found that the Artec Spider worked best with the PR2 in terms of high resolution and extreme accuracy regarding edges and miniature parts. In a completely automated scanning system, the PR2 is able to respond to analysis and data from the Artec Spider, moving it and the object strategically and precisely as instructed to complete comprehensive scanning. At each viewpoint, it takes a snapshot, which is merged with the last picture, until a whole object is completed.”

Because this project is focused on objects that are small, can fit into a hand, and have a high level of detail, the Artec Spider is the perfect tool for the job. The Spider was designed specifically for CAD users and perfect for reverse engineering, product design, quality control and mass production. It requires no calibration, no markers and offers real time scan alignment. It also boasts super high detail of fine objects and excellent texture capture.

“Artec’s Scanning SDK is responsible for the program running the Spider, which is able to make a “confidence map” that eliminates challenges with blind spots, recognizing the areas where more scanning is necessary to collect all the data. With the programming from Artec’s Scanning SDK, the system understands when total scanning is complete. During complete testing of Artec’s Scanning SDK, the Artec Spider, and the PR2 working together, researchers concluded that the algorithms responsible for visibility and boundaries were excellent, as well as algorithms regarding rounded edges and density.”

Different Scans Taken with Artec Spider

Although the Artec Scanners are very user friendly, it is extremely interesting to see how the object is scanned when the user, the PR2 robot, get’s direct feedback. Where a human would have to figure out what angles of the scan they are missing, the robot has a more instantaneous response to what part of the object’s texture and geometry are missing. And it’s great to see more and more ways we can apply the amazing scanning technology behind the Artec series of 3D scanners.

Last week, the ROM announced their new exhibit outlining Sir John Franklin’s lost 1845 expedition to find passage in the Arctic Northwest. The centrepiece of the exhibit? A full-scale, 3D printed replica of the bell that once rung aboard the HMS Erebus.

PARKS CANADA - Recovery of the bell of the HMS Erebus

The replica of John Franklin’s bell was created using an Artec Eva 3D Scanner and a 3D Systems ProJet 660Pro. First, the 3D scan was actually done underwater to ensure that the bell kept it’s original shape and was not damaged during the extraction. The Artec Eva has the advantage of being one of the most flexible scanners on the market today, and has the ability to capture both colour and geometry simultaneously. Second, the replica was printed on a ProJet 660Pro, 3D Systems’ full colour printer (and one we use every day here at Objex Unlimited), due to its amazing colour reproduction and photo realistic printing abilities. When it comes to realism, there really is no other 3D Printer that can reproduce colours like the 3D Systems x60 Series.

[hs_action id=”6496″]

From the National Post: “The bell that was recovered from the ship requires extensive conservation and so the creation of a full-size 3D replica — the only one in the world — seems to us to be a great way to launch this project,” said Janet Carding, the museum’s director and CEO.”

There are certainly no shortage of examples where 3D scanning and 3D printing have been used in conjunction to restore historically significant items and artifacts that would otherwise be too fragile or delicate for public display. Every day, more and more museums are turning to 3D printing as a means to create perfect replicas of existing artifacts, or restoring artifacts that have already been damaged.

The Chinese government has found an amazing new application of 3D printing and scanning technologies: preserving as well as replicating the famous Qianshou Guanyin sculpture, which is carved into Mount Boading in the Dazu District of China. The 3D printing of historical artifacts seems to be a growing trend, reminding us the power and flexibility of eternalizing any object with a scan, a design file, and a 3D model.

“Engineers have 3D scanned the 12.5 X 7.7 meter statue, which was carved into a cliff during the reign of the Southern Song Dynasty from 1127–1279. From the 3D scans they have printed out a replica of the famous sculpture, which is about 33% the size of the real thing. This has been a great way to preserve the sculpture digitally, so that generation after generation can appreciate the work, even as the original continues to corrode. This is the first of many restoration projects that the Chinese government has planned on using this technology for.

In addition to the printing of a replica, the Chinese are also engaging in a major project to restore the beautiful piece, which over the centuries has been the victim of nature. The replica gives engineers a wonderful model to use as a reference during the restoration process. Many of the fingers on the hands, making up this large piece of art are missing. Traditionally, restoration specialists would use molding and casting to reproduce the missing pieces. However, with the help of 3D printing, they can now save time and money, while restoring the sculpture in a much more accurate way.” –3DPrint.com

This is a great example of how 3D printing and scanning can be applied in new innovative ways. With the knowledge that nothing lasts forever in the physical world, combined with the fact that a picture can only show so much, it becomes clear just how powerful 3D printing and scanning technology can be as means of preservation. A 3D model, whether in CAD design or 3D printed, gives a much deeper story, and doesn’t degrade over time.

“Are you a fan of the Big Bang Theory? We are! Those geeky, nerdy, awkward, but lovable guys often remind us of…well…us! And last season on the show, those boys finally caught up with us. They stumbled onto 3D scanning/printing.

In Season 6, Episode 14 (called the “Cooper/Kripke Inversion”), Howard Wolowitz and Raj Koothrappali order customized figurines of themselves online. When the toys arrive, they are quickly disappointed at how little the dolls resemble them. Raj suggests buying a used 3D Printer and doing the job right. They scan themselves and Bernadette with a Kinect sensor and manufacture perfect replicas of each other in color.

The episode as hilarious, but there is a dark secret… Fact of the matter is, the real scanning was done with an Artec Eva scanner, not a Kinect sensor. The scans done with Kinect didn’t have the right resolution/texture for a quality, color 3D print.” – artec3d.com
